Longtime Perry, Ga. mayor retiring

Associated Press - December 29, 2009 8:34 AM ET

PERRY, Ga. (AP) - Jim Worrall says he had a list of tasks to be performed when he took office as mayor of Perry in 1989.

Items on the list included building the Perry Parkway, establishing a community center and revitalizing the Perry High School building.

Worrall says all those things have been done, and it's time for a new vision for the city. So Worrall did not seek re-election this year and will be succeeded by Jimmy Faircloth in January.

The Telegraph newspaper says a group of residents approached Worrall in 1988 with the idea that he run for mayor. Worrall was then an educator eyeing retirement. He became mayor after coming in second in the general election and winning the runoff.
