Today eye surgeons around the country are doing their part...including those in South Georgia and North Florida. 100 doctors nationwide performed surgery on 100 patients in 100 minutes this morning and our Brandon Beyer joined one of our local surgeons to catch the action.
The cataracts in 71 year old Ola Mae Woodsen's eyes had been on a steady decline for the past 5 years, so much so that it began to affect her day to day life.
"I could no longer read"
Wednesday morning, her five year problem was fixed in less than ten minutes by Dr. Tony Weaver of Tallahassee's Eye Associates, "I'm just a window cleaner, and Ola Mae's windows needed cleaning."
At exactly 7:30am Wednesday morning, Ola Mae and 99 other patients across the country who live with cataracts had their vision go from murky to crystal clear. To have "crystalens" implanted usually costs anywhere from 5 to 10 thousand dollars, but to help get the word out Bausch and Lomb donated a hundred pair, at no cost and let local doctors choose the lucky patient.
"We selected Ola Mae because of her smile. She has one of those smiles that just brightens a room", said Dr. Weaver.
Here's how the procedure works, and this is where it gets a bit graphic. The doctor basically the eye's "natural" lens. The one clouded with cataracts. That part is sucked away with tiny vacuum and a crystalens is implanted. The entire procedure takes less than 10 minutes and Ola Mae's vision -- will be the best it's been in her life.
"She'll see better than she did even in the peak of her health."
"It's amazing. I can already see the difference", Ola Mae added. Now Ola Mae can once again pick up one of her favorite things... a book.
