A state-of-the-art entertainment complex is in the works in northeast Tallahassee. ABC 27's Rebecca Baer has more on whether a new business like this can survive in a struggling economy.
Bowling is one of the most popular sports in the country. Every year 66 million people hit the lanes. And now a Tallahassee man is hoping bowling popularity pays off. Next year Jake Whitfield plans to open Lane 7 on Kerry Forest Parkway. But this won't be your typical bowling alley.
"We're going to have 22 first class lanes, 150 seat restaurant, more than enough video games," says Whitefield.
But in this economy surveys show people are spending less on entertainment and dining. That doesn't bother Whitfield.
"I understand we're in a situation with the economy, but I ultimately think that this is something unique and fun for families and people of all kinds, so I think people will find a way to still have some fun and enjoy themselves," said Whitefield.
And anticipation is already building among some local residents. Several stopped by to check out the construction at the Northampton Shopping Center.
"With I guess there being only one or two other bowling alleys in town, we don't have anything like this, on this side of town, so I think it's a great idea," said Jennifer Warren, nearby resident.
Even nearby restaurant owners say they welcome the competition.
"I'm not worried, I'm happy, I mean the more good locations, I hope this guy's going to do a good job, bring more people to this shopping center and this will help everyone I'm sure," said Ahmed Alsarou, owner of Sahara Café.
Just like local bowlers will welcome the competition here. Lane 7 is expected to open in January of 2009.
