Tallahassee, FL (WTXL) Slow sales are not the only thing retailers have to worry about during the holiday season. Shoplifting is also an issue, nationally and locally. ABC 27's Abbey Phillips tells us how you may get less of a deal, when others steal.

It's commonly referred to as the five finger discount. Everyone knows shoplifting can be costly for businesses, but it also hurts consumers. Many times businesses pass the profit loss and security costs on to shoppers.

According to the national association for shoplifting prevention, there are approximately 27 million shoplifters, or 1 in 11 people, in our nation.

Tallahassee police say they haven't finished putting the numbers together of retail thefts this holiday season. While stores can use things like surveillance cameras, lost prevention, and security tags to reduce theft, they can also use law enforcement.

According to the National Association for Shoplifting Prevention, more than 13 billion dollars worth of goods are stolen from retailers each year.
