TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Florida State University's President John Thrasher delivered the State of the University Wednesday evening during a faculty-senate meeting.

President Thrasher started by talking about the tragic shooting at Hot Yoga Tallahassee that took the lives of an FSU student and faculty member.

He said the devastation has had a profound effect on the community, leading him to make a pledge to do everything in his power to keep guns off FSU's campus.

President Thrasher said the safety of students and staff remains his top priority and he will continue working with campus police to improve security.

"People have a right to feel safe in their schools, in their places of worship, and everywhere they go, the mall, a movie theater, certainly a yoga studio. And certainly a college campus," said Thrasher.

And with more applications coming in each year, President Thrasher stresses his goal to become one of the country's top 25 public universities.

He said the university's graduation and student retention rates are the driving forces behind climbing in the ranks.

FSU is knocking on the door of reaching the top 25 public universities list, now just one spot away.
