TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - On the heels of this weekend's spring game, Florida State University is helping to address an important health issue, sickle cell trait.

"Sickle Cell trait affects not only African Americans - a big piece of misinformation - but also people of Asian, Italian, Greek, Turkish, Latin, Mediterranean and Indian descent.

Healthcare students and and professionals from all surrounding campuses are encouraged to attend the symposium, which features a select few prizes footballs signed by FSU’s new coach, Willie Taggart.

Former FSU Seminole and NFL wide-receiver Devard Darling will give the luncheon keynote address during the symposium from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the FSU Student Services Building, 874 Traditions Way.

Darling's identical twin brother, Devaughn Darling, died of exertional sickling during mat drills at FSU in 2001.

The symposium will be followed by a Sickle Cell walk to a memorial in the late Darlings honor.
