TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - It's Healthy Campus Week at Florida A&M University.

The goal is pretty straightforward: Encouraging everyone at FAMU to be physically active and make healthier choices.

The university is one of about 70 schools across the country working with the Partnership for a Healthier America. The Healthier Campus Initiative kicked off Monday with blood pressure checks and fitness screenings.

Later this week, students can get in on a cooking class, a campus "walk out," and yoga. University officials say all of this promotes a better lifestyle for students.

"I think it's important that they stay physically healthy, because it helps with the mind as well as the body," said Michael Smith, the Director of Finance and Administration, Business and Auxiliary Services. "So, you talk about a healthy mind, a healthy body helps the students stay alert, attentive, ready for studying, for classes, test-taking -- all of those things are going to them having a very good college experience."
