LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - Dog owners in Leon County say they hope to have more places for their furry friends to roam around.

The county commission will review the possibility of adding more dog parks in three unincorporated areas at a workshop Tuesday.

Right now, there are four dog parks in Leon County, but there's a plan to add more, and that's welcome news to dog owners who often travel quite a bit to get to a place like Tom Brown Park.

The county wants to add a new dog park each year for the next three fiscal years. Each one would cost around $30,000.

Staff is considering J. Lee Vause Park and Robinson Road Park as two initial sites. A third could be added at Apalachee Regional Park.

Dog owners we talked to said they welcome the proposal, which would bring parks closer to more people, and more people means more pets.

"It's a great idea, because Tom Brown is, by far, the best available dog park in Tallahassee for socializing a dog," said Timothy Lewis, who owns Nugget. "Say I'm over on the north side and off of Bannerman, or I'm on the west side off of Tharpe -- if there was a park over there, it would be very convenient."

The county says the costs to maintain the new parks would be covered by the existing Parks and Recreation budget. All four existing parks are within city limits: Tom Brown, San Luis, Boulevard and Chain of Parks.

If approved, the proposal would start construction in Fiscal Year 2019 at J. Lee Vause Park.

The idea will be discussed Tuesday morning at a Leon County budget workshop.
