TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A local 7th grade student at Maclay School has received national recognition for raising $1.25 million in state funding for visually impaired children.
Monday afternoon, Paloma Rambana was surprised to learn she was receiving national recognition for her efforts.
Rambana has an incurable vision condition. She was born legally blind.
When she was 9 years old, she started a campaign called 'Fill the Gap' to ask state legislators to fund the division of blind service children's program.
Rambana is one of two middle and high school students in Florida to receive The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards for her volunteer community service.
