LIBERTY COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - Widespread power outages are stopping schools in Liberty County from re-opening indefinitely, according to county officials.
Steve Cutshaw, the Mayor of the City of Bristol, says widespread power outages are the main reason city officials can't estimate when they will be able to send students back to school.
Mayor Cutshaw says there are so many downed power lines and trees that utility crews can't give a date for power restoration yet.
He goes on to say, the safety of students is most important, and right now, many roads are unsafe to drive on.
"The fuel station for the county where they would fill up is down. Everything is down so there's way to actually refuel the buses at this time," said Mayor Cutshaw. "We understand everything is coming, but it's just going to be a slow process to get it back up online."
Another factor, Mayor Cutshaw says the county hasn't assessed damages to the high school yet.
There are two schools in Bristol. A preschool and K-8 school, as well as a high school. The K-8 school doesn't have any damages.
Mayor Cutshaw told us as they learn new information about when schools might reopen, county officials will be making announcements as well as posting information throughout the county.
