TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- In celebration of Earth Day, Tallahassee is showing the community how it’s going green.

The city hosted a Greening Tallahassee event at the Thomas Smith Reclamation Facility.

This facility processes an average of 18 million gallons of Tallahassee’s waste water daily. Without this reclamation facility, nutrients, like nitrogen and ammonia, would end up in our aquifer and Florida Springs.

Those don’t supply drinking water, but they clean up water that can be used to irrigate crops, among other things.

On Sunday, families came out to have fun and find out how the city is making our community environmentally friendly. The water treatment facility and new solar farm are examples of those efforts.

The event is all about bringing resources to the community, so everyone can learn ways to be more earth friendly.

"The cars we might work on in our drive ways, or the pets that we have in our neighborhood, how even small things like that, everyday things we don't think about does contribute to hurting the city we live in and the environment," said Jennifer Elmore, who attended Greening Tallahassee. "So it's good for the kids to come out and learn, it's good for the adults to come out and learn."

Tallahassee utilities and storm water management set up interactive games for the kids, and even adults, to raise awareness about everyday activities that can pollute the planet.

Organizers say, little things, like building a rain garden at your house, help recycle water.

Having landscaped areas allows up to 30 percent more water to soak into the ground, which improves the quality of water in nearby lakes and streams.

Organizers say, this Earth day event is not just a celebration of our planet, it’s also a reminder that it’s important for each of us to do our part in greening our routine every day.
