TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (The News Service of Florida) - Even as gas prices approach three dollars per gallon, Memorial Day travel is expected to be up five percent in 2018.

According to Triple A, more than 2.2 million Floridians are expected to travel for the long weekend, with increases in the number of people driving, flying and cruising to their destinations.

88 percent of travelers will drive, and they’ll find gas prices at the highest levels in nearly four years, up more than 50 cents from last May.

Still, Triple A spokesman W. D. Williams says Floridians love to travel and will just spend less on other things like hotels and food, adding that people plan to get on the road earlier this year.

“Our peak travel days are expected to be Thursday and Friday," said Williams. "When you combine that with the folks who are still working, we advise people to plan their travels to avoid major metropolitan areas during the rush hour.”

While gas prices are up, the cost of airfare, rental cars and hotel rooms are all down this year. The most popular Memorial Day travel destination for 2018 is Orlando.
